ARC Review: His and Mine by Benét Stoen

Title: His and Mine by Benét Stoen: A Novel in Verse

Synopsis: A broken boy and a broken girl find each other. And while wary of the other at first, they help each other through difficult times in their lives. Maybe together, they’ll find purpose and meaning.

Trigger Warnings: Abuse, attempted suicide, self harm

Notes: I was provided an ARC of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review

Thoughts: I enjoyed this novel more than I thought I would! It’s a novel in verse, which I’ve never read before, and I fell completely in love with the concept. The writing was beautiful and there were many one liners that I adored. It’s speedy and quick– I read it in about an hour, which is very unlike me.

  • “I saw a boy on the street corner of his and mine and I saw his arms covered in lines of tragic poetry no one cares to read.”

  • This isn’t the type of story I usually stray towards but I’m glad I read it. Due to the format, it wasn’t very detailed and descriptive but it was personal. I felt connected to the characters and I thought it was a very beautiful story. If you are comfortable with the topics discussed then I truly recommend this debut novel.

I’ve read a few books in verse, but not many. It’s not my preferred style but I’m open to it. I’ve never heard of this book before but after reading your review I’m thinking I might like to check it out! It sounds super-angsty, but I’m okay with that if the angst is done well. 🙂
